He looks SCREEN LEFT (to Jonathan) or SCREEN RIGHT (to Nick), depending on who he's talking to. JONATHAN It seems to be an of out-of-date aluminum compound. CAPTAIN PAGE (to Jonathan) Any idea where it might have been used in the past? JONATHAN From what I've gathered, it hasn't been utilized since the sixties. Canning companies used it to pack anchovies. CAPTAIN PAGE Thanks, Jonathan. Jonathan nods in response. His image is SQUASHED DOWN and out of frame as CAPTAIN PAGE'S WINDOW returns to SCREEN LEFT. CAPTAIN PAGE O'Malley? Are you familiar with any local anchovy canneries? NICK There used to be one off Lakeshore Drive. But it closed years ago. Captain Page studies a MAP OF CHICAGO hanging on his wall. CAPTAIN PAGE Pier 18. I'll meet you there. INT. THE FLY'S DRUG DEN - DAY Miss Chicago Contestants, still in talent show outfits and sashes, are being tied with rope to chairs by Crony #2. All sob, except Kate. As Crony #2 finishes the last girl and leaves, Kate struggles to get free. MISS DOWNERS GROVE (through her tears) We're all going to die... Kate can't take any more of this. KATE Relax, girls. Everything's gonna be fine. I'm working undercover with the Chicago P.D. to prevent Pixies like you from having their wings clipped and turned into Angel Dust. MISS SKOKIE Wait, we don't understand. How'd you know we're Pixies? KATE (like they're 3 year- olds) Like I said, I'm with the Chicago Police Department... MISS HYDE PARK So are you saying you're not really Miss Winnetka? KATE No. I'm not really Miss Winnetka. A beat of silence, then -- MISS SKOKIE That means we all have a chance to win the pageant! ALL GIRLS Yeah!!! MISS HYDE PARK (to the room; Kate first) Wait. If you're tied up, and I'm tied up, and we're tied up -- (lost; back to Kate) And you're tied up, how can you get us out of here? The chorus of sobbing resumes. KATE Miss Skokie? Do you still have your nail file? MISS SKOKIE Never go anywhere without it. (sobs) Even a kidnapping. (struggles) But it's stashed in my sash and I..can't..reach..it. Miss Skokie pulls the file from her sash with her teeth. Kate scoots her chair a few inches over. Miss Skokie drops the nail file into Kate's tied hands -- Kate catches it! ROW OF TIED HANDS All the hands clap. KATE'S HANDS She begins to file down the rope. It's working when -- THE FLY ENTERS. THE FLY (popping a sugar cube) What it is, ladies. What it is. He walks the row, looking to see which girl is going to go first. He stops at Kate. Drags his long pinky nail down her cheek. Kate spits in The Fly's face. He wipes it off. THE FLY Feisty... I like that. You go last. He moves down the line and stops at Miss Skokie. MISS SKOKIE Wait. Take Miss Downers Grove first. THE FLY Sure, why not. MISS DOWNERS GROVE (to Miss Skokie) You bitch! Miss Downers Grove lunges towards Miss Skokie in rage, but she's tied down and doesn't really get anywhere. THE FLY Don't cry baby. It won't hurt...much. The Fly reaches for Miss Downers Grove. She tries to fend * him off by kicking and screaming. It's futile. The Fly is * about to tear her wings off when -- KATE'S HANDS Frantically filing down the rope... There! She breaks free and leaps to Miss Downer Grove's aid with a Karate-kick to The Fly's face. Miss D.G. runs behind the other girls. KATE Chicago P.D.! You're under arrest. The Fly stands back up, touches his thumb to his lip (a la Bruce Lee). He's bleeding. GREEN. The girls SCREAM. THE FLY (to Crony #2) Take her out back and shoot her. As Crony #2 closes in on Kate -- EXT. NICK'S CAR - SECONDS LATER GROUND LEVEL Nick's car skids to a halt. Smoke bleeds from the wheels. '70S ZOOM OUT EXT. DOCKS - DAY Nick exits the car. Captain Page is already there. They greet each other at the trunk of Captain Page's '76 El Dorado. CAPTAIN PAGE O'Malley, we only get one chance at this. NICK I know, Sir. CAPTAIN PAGE We're gonna need all the help we can get. Captain Page unscrews his LOW-TECH HOOK HAND, tosses it in the trunk and pulls out an ARTIFICIAL HAND WITH BRASS KNUCKLES. He screws it on. All their heads duck in sync. CAPTAIN PAGE Blocks another swing of the bat with his BRASS KNUCKLE HAND. CRONY #2 didn't anticipate this, caught like a deer in headlights. Captain Page CLOCKS him with his real hand, knocking him out cold. MISS CHICAGO CONTESTANTS Cheer the Captain. He whips out a knife and cuts the rope * that binds Miss Hyde Park's hands. She slithers up to him. Her arms caressing this cool cat's leather and legend. MISS HYDE PARK Baby, you got soul. CAPTAIN PAGE Ain't no thang. EXT. PIER - DAY The pier splinters off into two docks. Nick and Kate stop at the fork in the road. NICK You take that dock. I'll take this one. We continue with Nick. Gun drawn and eyes peeled, he moves along a wall of canisters. Standard in '70s cop shows, canisters tend to be stacked very high in areas where fights break out. THE FLY'S KALEIDOSCOPE POV Watches Nick approach, then ducks behind the CANISTERS. NICK Moves to the end of the wall of canisters. Positions himself to spin around with his gun when -- THE FLY PUSHES A CANISTER It hits Nick. As a reflex, Nick fires his .44. But the impact knocks the gun from his hand -- NICK'S .44 Slides 20 yards down to the end of the dock. EXT. OTHER DOCK - CONTINUOUS BACK OF KATE'S HEAD She hears the echo of Nick's gunfire. Does that hair flip as she spins to face camera. She bolts in Nick's direction. EXT. NICK'S DOCK - CONTINUOUS NICK recovers from the canister hit. Looks down the dock at his gun. It's too far away. Then turns to face The Fly who approaches, menace in each step. Oh, it's on! THE FLY In yo' face! '70S COP SHOW STYLE FIST FIGHT The Fly throws a RIGHT HOOK. Nick ducks. A LEFT HOOK. Nick ducks. Another RIGHT HOOK. Nick ducks that, too. Frustrated, The Fly lunges and two-handed chokes Nick. But Nick pulls that good ol' Shatner move. In one fell swoop, Nick throws his two arms up - knocking The Fly's hands away - then lunges both hands down in a NECK CHOP. The Fly is stunned - and temporarily defenseless. Nick pulls a sucker punch, tagging The Fly in the gut. Then one BIG PUNCH, arm waaaay back, into The Fly's face. CANISTERS Organized like bowling pins. Nick's punch throws The Fly into the canisters. They all tumble over. The Fly recovers, but his SUNGLASSES are cracked. He pulls them off - revealing his YELLOW EYES - and tosses them aside. The Fly retaliates with a FLY KICK into Nick's chest -- THE FLY Removes his scarf. Wraps the slack around his hands and pulls the tether tight. NICK Dazed, his back to The Fly. The Link strangles him from behind with its scarf. Nick can't pry himself free. KATE Runs up. Pulls her 5-point SU2 BADGE and flings it at-- THE FLY Camera position behind him, his head thrusts back. The badge stuck in his forehead like a Chinese Star. As he falls -- RACK FOCUS To Kate. Her arm still hyper-extended. NICK Pries himself free from the scarf noose. He kicks The Fly for the final exclamation point, then turns to Kate. NICK You know, I would've had him. KATE Uh-huh. Right. INT. P. DADDY'S SUPPER CLUB - DAY A sign hangs behind the bar: "Bouncer Wanted." The atmosphere is that post-case celebration. Everyone smokes cigarettes. Jonathan waxes on to the Bartender. JONATHAN ...And there's supposed to be this big furry guy named Chewbacca. He's the renegade pilot's best friend. The Bartender looks at Jonathan like he's an idiot. We MOVE * further down the bar to Nick and Kate, who also smoke. Nick raises his glass for a toast. Kate raises hers. NICK To swatting The Fly. Kate doesn't toast. NICK Why aren't you toasting? KATE Aren't you going to thank me? NICK What for? KATE For saving your life. NICK Oh that little detail. (sincere) Thanks. (looks at her feminist symbol) You know, this women's lib may have a future after all. Kate smiles. It's a Nick kind of compliment. KATE There may be hope for you yet. Carl enters from the back room, one CHICK under each arm. NICK I see you've gotten over Trixie. CARL I'll never get over Trixie. Truth is, I just needed a shoulder to cry on. (grins) Four to be exact. Ain't that right, girls? The Girls nod. All turn upon hearing the familiar barking of Captain Page. He enters the bar wearing an AFRICAN PRINT SHIRT. CAPTAIN PAGE Benson! O'Malley! Where are those reports on The Fly! They were due on my desk first thing this morning!! NICK You'll have them first thing tomorrow morning. CAPTAIN PAGE That's what you said yesterday! NICK And that's what I'll say again tomorrow. CAPTAIN PAGE And Benson! This came through today. Captain Page pulls out a rolled up DOCUMENT. Hands it to Kate who unrolls it. A CITY "stamp of approval" on it. KATE Right On! My raise got approved!! CAPTAIN PAGE Congratulations. You will be paid the same as a man. As Kate reads the document, Captain Page whispers to Nick. CAPTAIN PAGE Don't worry. Your raise went through, too. But let's keep that between us. Nick winks. Captain Page turns to Carl. CAPTAIN PAGE And Carl. I received word that a warehouse full of stereos is missing from MidCity Stereo. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you? Carl leans on a stereo, trying to hide it. CARL If I did, you'd be the first to know. But speaking of music... Carl pulls out two TICKETS and hands them to Captain Page. CARL Who loves ya, baby? CAPTAIN PAGE Earth, Wind & Fire?! Front row at the Aragon! Carl, I don't know what to say. CARL Why say anything when we can dance? Carl pulls an 8-TRACK from his coat. Pops it in the player. CUE: "THE HUSTLE" by Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony. All collect into the middle of the dance floor and everyone starts to dance, except for Jonathan who sulks in the corner. Kate pulls him out by the hand. He's reluctant at first, but then gets into it. As Nick breaks into "The Windmill" -- MOVE UP Towards the ceiling until -- THE DISCO BALL Fills the frame, spinning with all its glitter and glory.
