An Interview with Athena Massey

TSC: How did you come to be a part of Black Scorpion?

Athena: I've worked a lot for Roger Corman through the years (I starred in Shadow of a Scream, Star Portal and Termination Man). So when "Black Scorpion" got going, they called and offered me the part of "Dr. Gail Waters / Hurricane." I read the script, my agent made the deal and I went to work.

TSC: What was your experience like on Black Scorpion?

Athena: Working on any Roger Corman production is always an adventure. His crews move extremely fast. One thing that happened, was that thanks to a combination of working late nights in the cold air, getting wet and having to do those loud theatrical laughs time and time again I lost my voice by the second day of shooting. With such a tight shooting schedule, I wasn't allowed to take anytime off to rest my voice. I worked for three weeks straight (Wave Good-bye and Zodiac Attack: Parts I and 2 were shot back-to-back). So I had to play Hurricane with whatever sound my vocal chords could make. I still cringe when I hear that painful rasp instead of what I know my voice should sound like. My normal voice would have given her more power and authorityI wish I were allowed to loop the entire episode. At least then, there would be consistency in the sound quality.

TSC: If you had one word to describe the cast and crew, on and off screen what would it be and why?

Athena: Overworked but also passionate and dedicated. Corman has a flair for finding and giving talented people their chance. However, he doesn't exactly lavish them with money. I think the cast and crew deserve a triple raise!

TSC: What kind of projects are you doing now?

Athena: I have a new film hitting the video stores on June 19th. It's called, "Harold Robbins' Body Parts." (The name is deceiving; it's not about the body parts of a man named Harold Robbins). -- It's an action-thriller and I star with Richard Grieco. Also, for all you video-gamers out there, look for me in the latest of the phenomenally successful "Command and Conquer" series, in "Command and Conquer: Yuri's Revenge." Lt. Eva Lee returns with a new sleeker and sexier look. "Black Scorpion: Zodiac Attack" airs on the Sci-fi Channel (at a new day and time) Saturday, June 23 & 30th. Hurricane blows into town again (with her pals, Inferno, Aftershock and Breathtaker) ready to squash that annoying, do-gooding bug-lady!

TSC: If Black Scorpion comes back for a second season will you return?

Athena: If they know whats good for them I will (ha ha ha)! I would love to. Unfortunately it's not in my hands but it might be in yours. If that's something you'd like to see, write or E-mail to both the Sci-fi Channel and www.BlackScorpion.net and let them know you'd like to see Hurricane return. Those cards and letters do make a huge difference. The conventional wisdom is that everyone who writes represents hundreds that don't. (That's show biz).

TSC: You are in a second episode of Black Scorpion correct? What can you tell us about that? Which episode did you like more?

Athena: Yes, my character, which was introduced in "Wave Good-bye," returns in "Zodiac Attack: Parts I & 2." We shot them all at once, so from an acting standpoint, it was like doing one very long episode. I had fun doing them all!

TSC: Do you ever get a chance to watch Black Scorpion? If so what do you think?

Athena: How can you not love any show that has such a sense of humor about itself?

TSC: How do you think women are portrayed on Black Scorpion as compared to other shows on television?

Athena: Less clothing more cleavage. And they really kick-ass.

TSC: (same kind of question) How do you think you are portrayed in film and TV now as compared to when you first started?

Athena: I've gone from the shy, sweet and virginal girl next-door to the self-confident, strong and sexy "woman" next door (and usually in a bigger house).

TSC: A lot of actors feel very strongly about causes likes Pediatric Aids, Cancer, and such? What kind of causes do you support and feel strongly about?

Athena: That's a very long list. Let's just say that I have a very soft spot for all that is in need whether it's animals, people or the planet.

TSC: What kind activates do you like to do in your free time?

Athena: What's free time? I love to learn and that can mean reading, traveling or trying a new sport. If I haven't done it, I want to do it. If I don't know it, I want to learn it.

TSC: And last question, is there anything you would like to say to the fans?

Athena: I've enjoyed communicating with so many of you on my official website, www.athenamassey.com. For those of you that haven't had a chance to visit yet, please drop on by. I'd love to show you around. There's interviews, photos, message boards, articles and up to the minute news.

The other, and very important thing that I want to say is, "thank you!" Thank you for all the support. There are times when you all lift my spirits and warm my heart. For whatever I may bring to you, you return it ten-fold.
